Trick or Treat!

Maybe it's because my first trick-or-treating experience ended dramatically, but Halloween has never been one of my "top three favorite holidays." So we played things low key this year, and used an outfit Elli already had to turn her into a clown.

We have been trying to get her into the swing of the end of Daylight Savings Time a bit early, so she was still napping around 4:30 this afternoon, when we needed to get her up and changed so that her Grandparents and Great-Grandma could see her before they had to go home to deal with the Trick-or-Treaters at their house.

Let's just say that Elli was in a really cranky mood when she got up, and that it took her a little while to get into the Halloween spirit. We tried a red nose to complete this costume, but there was much sobbing and wailing and wiping it off, so we gave up. Hopefully the outfit was sufficient for folks to know what she was supposed to be.

Her mood started to turn once she realized that she could say "Boo" to people and we were delighted and put items in her Halloween bag (her Elmo bag, of course!). By the time Great-Grandma (Ah-Dah) had to leave, Elli was in full out "help" mode... and tried to help her with the walker:

Her mood really turned once we practiced some trick-or-treating at our door.

Daddy pulled out the Abby Caddaby doll Mommy bought today at Target, and before I could even register that he had it in his hand, Elli was telling me "Abby Ca-dah-ba-dah-ba-dah-ba-dah!" (she has a little trouble stopping herself once she gets started on the name).

Then she had to give Abby kisses:

Then we went trick-or-treating to a select few houses in the neighborhood. At the first house, she was so excited to tell the neighbors about her "Abby" that she really didn't get that they'd put some candy in her bag. At the second, she waited until they put the candy in her basket, and then fished it out, and tried to put it back in their bucket. This is classic Elli -- if you do something for me, I'll do the same for you. By the third or fourth house, she had the routine down... Go to the person, smile and say "Boo" and then sign "thank you" and say "bye-bye."

We came home and played with a giant spoon while we watched the other kids keep trick-or-treating:

And then we used the spoon to feed Abby.

We don't have a picture of how Elli shared her blanket and bunny with Abby to help Abby go to sleep (and then signed to us that Abby was sleeping), nor do we have a picture of Mommy having to brush Abby's teeth in addition to Elli's because she was foolish enough to have brought Abby with us into the bathroom.

But for the first time in months, Elli did not cry when we left the room tonight when we put her to bed. She was too busy talking to Abby. Here's how we found her later this evening when we went to wake her up to give her the last of her medicine for her ear infection:

And then after screaming because she didn't want to take her medicine, she was all smiles when Daddy brought her Abby to snuggle with her and Mommy. (We didn't get the picture of the full-out smile Elli had when Daddy brought Abby over. She just looked at us like everything in the world was as perfect as it could possibly be!)

So perhaps there was a significant "trick" at our house this evening... Who knew a "Fairy in Training" could have caused so much happiness?
